Here Not There

Author:  Rachelle Rieke
I just finished another poem that I’d like to share called Here Not There. As I was walking around at work the other day during my break, observing people passing by, I was struck, not for the first time, by how disconnected people can be. Stepping into the elevator, I can pass by unnoticed as the world is framed so neatly in a brightly lit few inches, the world outside becoming grayed-out background noise, and I wonder in which world life is really being lived. Here or there?
Stepping out of the elevator, people and students hustle, faces intense and focused on an unseen reality, a future place – graduating, getting that promotion, reaching the top, becoming somebody. And I wonder how much of life is being lived in the future instead of the present moment given. Here or there?
I passed by people with downcast faces perhaps because of medical ailments or perhaps just in the smothering pain of feeling alone. Pain that is medicated in any number of ways just to escape, to live there instead of here.
How often are we trying to live somewhere else rather than enjoying the beauty of right here, right now? Dreaming is so wonderful and such an important aspect of what gives us hope, but we must never forget Him who is right here walking with us to there. However, when He walks us to there, it becomes here anyway! Lean into the One who is always with you here and not there.
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10

Here Not There

People hustle and bustle here and there, Brushing shoulders with others heedless, unaware. Heads cast down and faces grayed out, So certain or uncertain? of what they’re about.   What does your vacant gaze see? Not here, but There, wherever There may be? Up There, by virtuous bootstraps, at the top of the ladder? Up There in the clout where finally you’ll matter? Up There where your voice carries power and weight Surely There is the place upon which to fixate.

But wait…

Didn’t you know your answer is Here and not There? Here in God’s presence He does declare. You mattered to me before time began, And I’ve laid out for you a marvelous plan Of hope and promise and adventure life brings To touch lives, crush serpents, and do spectacular things. Here, you speak a whisper and mountains will move I’ve given you my heart and my will to approve. I’ve given you a harvest and everything you need Just cling on to your faith, it’s all in the seed.
